It's official--this coming Saturday, April 14, is Children's Poetry Day in New Hampshire Libraries. Governor Lynch signed a Proclamation last week making it so! The Proclamation is posted on the book display stand near the check-out desk along with several dozen children's poetry books.
Now is the time to sign your child up for the poetry workshop being held here at the library on Saturday at 10 am. Children in grades 2 through 5 will join local poet George Jack for a lively poetry event that includes a series of fun and creative writing exercises. Mr. Jack will also be reading some of his favorite poems. Call the library at 432-7154 to register.
Some of MY favorite poetry books for children are:
Graham, Joan Bransfield. Splish Splash. [JP GRA]
Kennedy, X.J., compiler. Knock at a Star: A Child's Introduction to Poetry. [J 811.008 KNO]
Little, Jean. Hey World, Here I Am! [J 811 LIT]
Worth, Valerie. Animal Poems. [J 811.54 WOR]
Here's a sample from Valerie Worth:
SQUIRREL
Late autumn rains
Fall colder than snow,
When the wet wind’s floods
Wash down from the trees
Their last ragged leaves—
Except where the creaking forks
Of the high black boughs hold fast
These rough brown bundles, woven so deep
Not a drop nor a draft may seep
Inside, to the nest where
The gray squirrel sleeps:
Wrapped snug in his fat,
And his fur, and the curl
Of his tail.
Spend some time and peruse the display shelves, you won't be disappointed!
