'Tis the season for caterpillars--the good (butterflies), the bad (tent caterpillars), and the ugly (just about every variety). Here's a winning little stanza from a poem by Robert Graves called simply, "The Caterpillar":
Under this loop of honeysuckle,
A hungry, hairy caterpillar,
I crawl on my high and swinging seat,
And eat, eat, eat—as one ought to eat.

Just about everyone's favorite caterpillar is The Very Hungry Caterpillar from the book by Eric Carle.

Other picture book caterpillars are found in:

Bruel, Robert O. Bob and Otto. [JP BRU]

Jarrett, Clare. Arabella Miller's Tiny Caterpillar. [JP JAR]

Keller, Holly. Farfallina & Marcel. [JP KEL]

Kent, Jack. The Caterpillar and the Polliwog. [JP KEN]

[Note: I came across Robert Graves' poem in the American Academy of Poets' Poem-a-Day email. You never know what little gems will show up in your inbox. To sign up, click here. Be aware that the box to check off says, "Poem-a-Day (during April)," but I've been receiving a poem each day through April and beyond!]
