When I was a child, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day, the day people went to the cemetery to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. It was always on May 30, so one was never guaranteed a three-day weekend. This photo, from 1899, shows school children preparing daisies to be used to decorate grave markers.
