Stepping Stones: A Refugee Family's Journey [JP RUU] by Margriet Ruurs, with illustrations by Syrian artist, Nizar Ali Badr, has just been added to our children's room collection. The book is special for several reasons:
- It illustrates the plight of a Syrian family escaping from the turmoil of their home country.
- It is presented in both English and Arabic languages.
- The illustrations are created with stones.

This book would make a great classroom discussion starter for teachers at all levels. Art teachers can use it to show artists using non-traditional materials to express themselves. I think it could be a great visual lesson in metaphor, too.
